Teeth pick up colour over a lifetime of coffee, tea, red wine and everything else, and professional whitening lifts a good deal of that back off. At both clinics it starts with an examination rather than a shade guide, because what will actually work depends on what is causing the colour.

Two Ways to Do It

In the chair. One appointment at either clinic, with the gum protected and a stronger gel than anything sold over a counter. We use Philips Zoom and Pola Office. This is the option for people who want it done and finished rather than managed at home.

At home, in trays we make for you. We take impressions, the laboratory makes trays that fit your teeth exactly, and you wear them with gel for a set period each day over a couple of weeks. We use Boutique Whitening, Pola Day and Pola Night, Opalescence. It takes longer, it is gentler, and you keep the trays, which matters more than it sounds: colour comes back over time, and topping up with trays you already own is far easier than starting again.

Plenty of people do both, starting in the chair and holding it there at home. What we suggest comes out of looking at your teeth, not out of a package.

What Whitening Will Not Do

This is the part most whitening advertising leaves out, and it is the part that decides whether you end up happy.

  • It does not change crowns, veneers, bridges or white fillings. They stay the shade they were made. If you have one at the front, whitening the teeth around it can make it stand out more, not less.
  • It works on some stains and not others. Surface staining from food, drink and smoking responds well. Colour that comes from inside the tooth, from a knock, from a root canal or from certain medicines, is a different problem with different answers.
  • It does not fix a tooth that is dark on its own. That is internal bleaching, and it is done from the inside of the tooth.
  • It is not a substitute for a clean. A lot of what people call yellowing is build-up, and it comes off with a scale and polish rather than a gel.

If the colour you want cannot be reached by whitening, veneers are the honest next conversation, and we would rather have it before you spend money on the wrong thing.

Why We Look First

Whitening gel goes over whatever is already there. Put it over untreated decay, a leaking filling or inflamed gums and you get pain rather than a result. So the examination comes first: we check for decay, check the gums, and check what your existing fillings and crowns will look like next to lighter teeth. That is not an upsell, it is the difference between whitening working and whitening hurting.

Sensitivity during whitening is common and usually settles. Tell us if your teeth are already sensitive, because the concentration and the wear time can both be adjusted, and that conversation is worth having before you start.

The Single Dark Tooth

One tooth going darker than its neighbours, usually after a knock or a root canal, is a common and separate thing. It can often be lightened from the inside, which is internal bleaching, and it is available at both clinics. Whitening the outside of that tooth will not match it to the others, so it is worth having it assessed before you whiten anything.

Having It Done in Kirwan and Bohle Plains

In-chair whitening is a single appointment, so it fits into a day. Take-home trays need one visit for impressions and a second to collect them and be shown how to use them, and after that it is yours to run at home. Either clinic can do all of it, so choose the one that suits you.

At Both Clinics, and What Differs

The two clinics offer the same whitening, so choosing between them is mostly a question of which is closer. What they share:

  • In the chair: Philips Zoom and Pola Office.
  • Take-home trays: Boutique Whitening, Pola Day and Pola Night, Opalescence.
  • One dark tooth: internal bleaching is done at both.
  • Health funds: claims go through HICAPS at both clinics, subject to what your policy covers for a cosmetic treatment.
  • Getting here: on-site parking at both, and the same hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
  • Languages: Hindi, Punjabi and Nepali are spoken across our clinics, and Dr Pa Sia, who works at both Kirwan and Bohle Plains, speaks Hmong. Who is rostered varies by day, so ask when you ring. There is more on our languages page.

What differs is the address. The Kirwan clinic is on Thuringowa Drive, near The Willows. The Bohle Plains clinic is inside the Kalynda Chase estate, in Townsville’s western growth corridor. The Bohle Plains clinic has a kids’ play corner.

Which Option Suits Which Situation

There is no single right answer. The choice usually comes down to timing and how your teeth behave.

  • You have a date in mind. A wedding, a graduation or a milestone birthday is a good reason to work backwards. In-chair is one appointment. Take-home runs over a couple of weeks once the trays are in your hands, so allow for the visits before that as well.
  • You would rather go gradually. Take-home is worn for a set period each day, and the wear time and the concentration can both be adjusted if your teeth become sensitive.
  • Your teeth are already sensitive. Say so at the first appointment. It is one of the things we weigh when we suggest an option, and it is much easier to plan for than to discover halfway through.
  • You have a crown, a veneer or a front filling. Whitening will not change it, so the order of things matters. If one needs replacing, crowns and white fillings are both available at both clinics, and it is worth deciding that before the whitening rather than after.
  • You are planning braces or clear aligners. Both are available at these clinics. Mention whitening at the examination so we can plan the order of treatment around it.
  • You want something whitening cannot give you. If the colour or the shape you are after is beyond what a gel can do, porcelain and composite veneers are both available at both clinics, and the veneers page explains how they differ.

If the Examination Finds Something Else

Whitening is not done over untreated decay or inflamed gums, so sometimes the first appointment turns into a plan with the whitening at the end of it. Most of what comes up can be dealt with at the same clinic:

  • Decay or a worn filling. Fillings, including white fillings, are done at both clinics. There is more on the fillings page.
  • Gum problems. Gum disease treatment is available at both clinics, and a periodontist consults at both. See gum disease treatment.
  • Build-up rather than stain. Some of what looks like yellowing comes off at a check-up and clean, and it is worth finding that out before gel goes on.
  • A dark tooth with a problem inside it. Root canal treatment is done in house at both clinics, and so is internal bleaching for the colour afterwards.

Nothing here is a reason to put whitening off for good. It is a matter of doing things in the right order, and the written quote covers whatever the plan turns out to include.

Keeping the Colour Once You Have It

Whitening lifts the colour that is there now. It does not stop new colour forming, so how long it holds depends on what you drink, whether you smoke, and how often you maintain it. Take-home trays make that simple, because you already own them. Ask us what to use when it is time. Regular check-ups and cleans keep surface build-up from dulling the result in between.

Who We See Around Kirwan and Bohle Plains

Whitening usually means more than one visit: the examination, then either the whitening appointment or the tray appointments. With two clinics to choose between, you can use whichever is closer to home or work.

Bohle Plains is one of Townsville’s youngest suburbs: the median age is 28, against 38 across Queensland, and 48.5% of local families are couples with children. Defence is the largest employer of Bohle Plains residents, at 18.2%, and we see DVA card holders at both clinics.

Kirwan is one of Townsville’s largest suburbs, with 20,780 residents and a median age of 38, in line with the state. Together the two clinics serve the western side of Townsville.

What It Costs

The fee depends on whether you whiten in the chair, at home, or both, and you get a written quote after the examination so you have the figure before anything is booked. Whitening is a cosmetic treatment, so whether your health fund contributes depends on your policy: we check it at the desk through HICAPS. Payment plans are available if you would rather spread it, and there is more on our payment options page.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

In-chair is done in one appointment at either clinic and suits people who want it handled in a single visit. Take-home uses custom trays made from impressions of your teeth, worn for a set period each day over a couple of weeks, and it gives you the trays afterwards for topping up. Some people do both, starting in the chair and maintaining at home. Which one we suggest depends on your teeth, the kind of staining and how much time you want to give it.

No. Whitening lightens natural tooth enamel and has no effect on crowns, veneers, bridges or white fillings. If you have any of those at the front of your mouth, they will stay the shade they were made, which can leave them looking darker once the teeth around them lighten. This is worth knowing before you start rather than after, and it is one of the things we check at the examination.

It varies with what you eat and drink and whether you smoke. Coffee, tea, red wine and cola all put colour back. Take-home trays are the practical answer to that, because topping up occasionally is far less work than starting again. We are not going to give you a number of years, because nobody honestly can.

Whitening commonly causes some tooth sensitivity, usually short-lived, and some people get it more than others. Tell us if you already have sensitive teeth, because there are ways to manage it, including changing the concentration or the wear time. Gum irritation can happen too if gel sits on the gum, which is one reason take-home trays are made to fit your mouth rather than bought off a shelf.

Often yes, and it is a different treatment. A single tooth that has darkened after a knock or a root canal can sometimes be lightened from the inside, which is called internal bleaching. That is done at both clinics. Whitening from the outside will not fix that tooth, so it is worth having it looked at before you whiten the rest.

It depends on whether you have it in the chair, at home, or both. You get a written quote after the examination, before anything is booked. Whitening is cosmetic, so whether your health fund contributes depends on your policy, and we will check that with you at the desk.

Whichever is closer to home or work. The Kirwan clinic and the Bohle Plains clinic offer the same in-chair and take-home whitening, and internal bleaching for a single dark tooth. Both are open Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. Ring Kirwan on (07) 4723 2090 or Bohle Plains on (07) 4735 8500.

The examination comes first. In-chair whitening is then a single appointment. Take-home needs one visit for impressions and a second to collect your trays and be shown how to use them, followed by a couple of weeks of wearing them at home. If the examination finds decay or a gum problem, that is dealt with before the whitening starts, so the whole plan can be longer than the whitening itself.

Whitening waits until it is sorted. Fillings, gum disease treatment and root canal treatment are all done at both clinics, and a periodontist consults at both for gum problems. Once your teeth and gums are healthy, we go back to the whitening plan.
