A denture replaces teeth you have lost with a removable plate that sits against the gum, and a well-made one lets you eat and speak without thinking about it. Both our Townsville clinics make and fit the full range, and both place implants and have a periodontist who consults on site, so a denture case that turns into an implant or gum case does not have to move anywhere.

The Full Range, Not Just One Kind

Most people arrive thinking a denture is one thing. It is not, and the differences matter more than the price does, because the wrong type in the wrong mouth is the one that ends up in a drawer.

  • Full dentures replace a whole upper or lower arch when no natural teeth are left in it.
  • Partial dentures fill one or more gaps and rest against the teeth you still have.
  • Flexible partials in Valplast and Sunflex, with no metal clasps showing at the front.
  • Chrome partials with a thin cast metal frame, thinner and more rigid than an acrylic plate.
  • Immediate dentures, made in advance and fitted the day the teeth come out, so you do not go without.
  • Implant-retained dentures, which clip onto implants instead of resting loose on the gum.
  • Repairs, relines and adjustments, including dentures made somewhere else.

All of that is available at both our Townsville clinics. Which one we recommend comes out of the examination, not out of a catalogue.

Flexible or Chrome

If you are missing some teeth rather than all of them, this is the real decision. A flexible partial has a gum-coloured base that gives slightly and holds on without visible clasps, which is why people who have disliked the look of a metal one often get on with it. A chrome partial has a cast frame, so it can be made thinner and it passes the force of your bite onto your own teeth instead of pressing it into the gum. That is easier on the gum over the long run, and it is the more comfortable option for some people and not for others.

We make both at Kirwan and at Bohle Plains. The honest answer is that it depends on which teeth are missing, how healthy the remaining ones are, and what you want it to look like when you smile, and none of that can be settled before we have looked.

Immediate Dentures: Not Going Without

If teeth need to come out, an immediate denture is made beforehand and fitted the same day, so you do not spend the healing period with gaps. The trade-off is that gums shrink as they heal, so an immediate denture needs relining once things have settled. That is expected rather than a fault, and we plan for it from the start instead of raising it later.

When a Lower Denture Will Not Stay Put

Lower dentures have less ridge to hold on to than upper ones, and for some people no amount of adjustment fixes that. Implants can. Two or more implants are placed in the jaw and the denture clips onto them, so it stays where you put it and you can bite into something without bracing it with your tongue.

Implants are placed at both clinics using Osstem, Neoss, Straumann, Neodent and Nobel, so this is not a referral out of town. There is more on our Townsville and Bohle Plains implants page, and on All-on-4 if you are looking at a whole arch.

Gums First

A denture rests on gum and bone, so how healthy those are decides how well it fits and how long it keeps fitting. Dr Sudeep Singh, a registered Specialist Periodontist, consults at both Kirwan and Bohle Plains, which means gum disease that would undermine a new denture can be treated at our clinics rather than after the fact somewhere else.

Repairs and Relines

A denture that has cracked, lost a tooth or gone loose does not automatically need replacing. Bring it in and we will tell you which of those it is. Repairs and relines are done through our laboratory, and you do not need to have had the original made with us. A reline is a far smaller job than a new denture, and a loose denture left alone tends to rub, which is how sore spots start.

Getting It Done Without the Drive

Most patients around Townsville can do the whole course at one clinic, from the first examination to the last adjustment, and with a clinic at Kirwan and one at Bohle Plains you can choose the closer one. That includes the implant work if a denture ends up being held by implants, which is done at these clinics rather than referred to Brisbane.

Impressions can be taken with an intra-oral scanner where the case suits it, which most people find easier than a tray of impression material. The scanner is a Trios 3 at Kirwan and a Medit i700 at Bohle Plains.

Kirwan or Bohle Plains

The two clinics offer the same dentures, so choosing between them is mostly a question of which is closer. A denture is built over several visits and the review appointments matter, so the nearer clinic is usually the better one. What the two share, and the few things that differ:

  • At both clinics: full, partial, flexible, chrome, immediate and implant-retained dentures, with repairs and relines arranged through our laboratory. Implants are placed on site, a periodontist consults on site, and there is on-site parking. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
  • Languages: Hindi, Punjabi and Nepali are spoken across our clinics, and Dr Pa Sia, who works at both Kirwan and Bohle Plains, speaks Hmong. Who is rostered varies by day, so ask when you ring. There is more on our languages page.
  • Kirwan: on Thuringowa Drive, near The Willows.
  • Bohle Plains: inside the Kalynda Chase estate, in Townsville’s western growth corridor. The Bohle Plains clinic has a kids’ play corner. The cone beam CT imaging unit there is a Dentsply Sirona Orthophos XG 3D.

Planning a Denture Around Your Situation

When teeth still have to come out. If extractions are part of the plan, the usual order is examination and extractions first, impressions, a try-in, the fit, and then review visits. An immediate denture changes that order slightly: it is made beforehand so it can go in the day the teeth come out.

When you have some teeth left. A partial denture leans on the teeth you still have, which makes the health of those teeth and of your gums part of the decision. If a remaining tooth is loose or the gums are inflamed, it is better to find that out before the denture is made than after. That is one reason it helps to have a periodontist consulting at both clinics.

When a full denture will not stay put. The lower arch is the usual trouble. If adjustments do not settle it, a denture that clips onto implants is an option, and both clinics place implants. If you are looking at a whole arch on implants rather than a removable denture, All-on-4 is also available at both clinics. Which route suits you comes out of the examination and imaging, not out of a price list.

Getting used to a new denture. Your cheeks, tongue and gums all have to adapt, and the first days can feel strange. That is why the review visits are part of the plan rather than an optional extra. Bring a list of anything that rubs or clicks and we will adjust it.

Looking After What You Have

Wearing a denture does not end the need for check-ups. Any natural teeth you have left, your gums and the soft tissue under the denture all still get looked at, and a denture that has slowly stopped fitting is far easier to deal with early. Our check-ups page has more on what a visit involves.

A denture that breaks or goes loose. Do not glue it, and keep every piece. Repairs and relines are done by our laboratory rather than in the surgery, so we do not promise to repair a denture while you wait. Ring early and tell us what has happened.

Who We See Around Kirwan and Bohle Plains

Dentures suit people at many stages of life, and the two suburbs we serve are quite different: Kirwan is large and established, and Bohle Plains is one of the city’s youngest. Either way, the choice of clinic is yours.

Bohle Plains is one of Townsville’s youngest suburbs: the median age is 28, against 38 across Queensland, and 48.5% of local families are couples with children. Defence is the largest employer of Bohle Plains residents, at 18.2%, and we see DVA card holders at both clinics.

Kirwan is one of Townsville’s largest suburbs, with 20,780 residents and a median age of 38, in line with the state. Together the two clinics serve the western side of Townsville.

What It Costs

The fee depends on whether the denture is full or partial, what it is made from, and whether extractions or implants are part of it. You get a written quote after the examination, so you have the figure before anything is booked. We claim health fund rebates through HICAPS at the desk, we see DVA card holders, and interest-free payment plans are available through Afterpay, Zip, humm and DentiCare. Both clinics also accept Queensland Health vouchers. There is more on our payment options page.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Made here. The examination, the impressions, the try-in and the fit all happen at our Kirwan clinic (2/81 Thuringowa Dr) or our Bohle Plains clinic (2/1 Kalynda Pde), whichever you choose. The denture itself is built by our laboratory, which is normal for any dental practice, but every appointment you attend is at the clinic you choose.

A denture is built in stages rather than in one appointment: an examination and any extractions first, then impressions, then a try-in, then the fit, then review visits to adjust it as your gums settle. For patients travelling in we group and lengthen appointments where the laboratory schedule allows. The review visits are the ones people skip, and skipping them is the most common reason a denture ends up uncomfortable.

A flexible partial has no metal clasps. The base is a gum-coloured material that flexes slightly, so it is less visible at the front and often easier to settle into. We use Valplast and Sunflex. A chrome partial has a thin cast metal frame, which is more rigid, lets the denture be made thinner, and passes the bite onto your own teeth rather than into the gum. Neither is better in the abstract. Which one suits you depends on which teeth are missing and what is left to hold on to.

Usually not. Gums change shape after teeth come out, and a denture that has loosened or started rubbing normally needs a reline rather than replacement, which is a far smaller job than most people expect. Bring it in even if we did not make it. Repairs and relines are handled at all six clinics and the work is done by our laboratory.

Yes, and it is worth asking about if a lower denture will not stay put. Implants are placed at both our Townsville clinics and a denture can be made to clip onto them, so it stays where you put it and you can eat without holding it in place. There is more on our Townsville and Bohle Plains implants page.

It depends on whether the denture is full or partial, what it is made from, and whether any extractions or implants are involved. You get a written quote after the examination, before anything is booked. We claim health fund rebates through HICAPS at the desk, we see DVA card holders, and interest-free payment plans are available.

Whichever is closer, because the denture range and the repair and reline arrangements are the same at both. A denture takes several visits and the review appointments matter, so a shorter trip makes it easier to attend them. Both clinics have on-site parking.

We do not promise that. Repairs and relines are done by our laboratory, so how long yours takes depends on the work involved. Keep all the pieces, do not glue them, and ring one of the clinics early so we can tell you what to expect.

Not necessarily. Immediate dentures are made before the teeth come out and fitted the same day, at both clinics, so you do not go without. The trade-off is that gums change shape as they heal, so an immediate denture normally needs adjusting and later relining. Whether one suits you is decided at the examination.
