Taking a tooth out is the last option rather than the quick one, and a practice that reaches for it first is not saving you money, it is deferring a bigger bill. At Kirwan and Bohle Plains the alternatives get examined properly first, including the ones other practices refer away.
First: Can It Be Saved?
Before anything comes out, the question is what it would take to keep it. Depending on the problem that is a filling, a crown, root canal treatment, or gum treatment. Sometimes it is a combination, and sometimes it is more than the tooth is worth.
Extraction is genuinely the answer when the tooth is split below the gum, when decay has gone past what can be restored, when advanced gum disease has taken the bone holding it, or when an infection cannot be controlled any other way. You will be told which it is and what the alternative would have involved.
The Difficult Ones Are Done at Both Clinics
Not every extraction is a simple lift. A tooth broken off at the gum, one still buried, or one with curved or splayed roots may need to be removed surgically, in sections, through a small incision. That is done at both clinics, not referred to a city oral surgeon.
Both clinics have their own cone beam CT scanner, so the planning image is taken in the same room as the consultation. The Bohle Plains unit is a Dentsply Sirona Orthophos XG 3D. Seeing the roots and where the nerve runs before starting is what turns an unpredictable extraction into a planned one.
Wisdom teeth have their own page, since they are the extraction people ask about most.
Being Comfortable For It
Numbing comes first, with topical gel before the injection. What you feel during a straightforward extraction is firm pressure rather than pain, which surprises people.
If that is not enough, or you would simply rather not be present for it, oral sedation and intravenous sedation are available at both clinics and a general anaesthetic can be arranged with the visiting anaesthetist. There is more on our sedation page.
Afterwards
Expect soreness and some swelling for a few days, easing from there. You get written aftercare instructions and a number to ring, because the questions arrive in the evening.
Two things worth knowing. Bleeding should settle with twenty minutes of firm pressure on clean gauze, without peeking. And pain that increases around day three rather than fading is usually dry socket, where the clot has been lost from the socket; it is treatable and worth ringing about rather than enduring.
The Gap, and Why to Decide Now
A missing tooth is not a static situation. The teeth either side lean into the space, the tooth above or below drifts down into it, chewing moves to the other side, and the bone that held the root gradually resorbs. Every one of those makes replacing it later harder and more expensive.
So the replacement is worth planning before the extraction, not months after. Implants and dentures are both done at both clinics, and in some cases an implant can be placed at the time the tooth comes out. Deciding to do nothing is also a legitimate choice, particularly for a back tooth, and we would rather you made it knowingly.
Having It Done in Kirwan and Bohle Plains
Both Townsville clinics do this work. The Kirwan clinic is on Thuringowa Drive, near The Willows, and the Bohle Plains clinic is inside the Kalynda Chase estate, in Townsville’s western growth corridor. Use whichever is closer to you, and the follow-up is at the same place.
Kirwan and Bohle Plains: What Is the Same, and What Differs
Extractions are planned and carried out the same way at both clinics, so which one you book is mostly a question of distance. What they share, and what differs:
- At both clinics: simple and surgical extractions, cone beam CT imaging, oral and intravenous sedation, a visiting anaesthetist for general anaesthetic, urgent time held each day, implants, dentures and immediate dentures, on-site parking, and a periodontist who consults at both. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
- Where they differ: the location, the make of the cone beam scanner (the Bohle Plains model is named above), and a kids’ play corner at Bohle Plains.
When the Tooth Is Infected or Painful Now
Both clinics hold time each day for urgent problems, and an extraction is sometimes the right answer rather than a last resort. Ring first and say what is happening. Our emergency page explains what to do outside opening hours and which symptoms mean a hospital rather than a dentist.
Gum Disease and Loose Teeth
Severe gum disease is one of the reasons a tooth comes out: once the bone that holds it has gone, the tooth loosens and can no longer be saved. Gum disease treatment is available at both clinics, and a periodontist consults at both, so a loose tooth is looked at first for whether treating the gums could let it stay. Our gum disease page explains what that involves.
Planning the Gap: Dentures or an Implant
Several teeth, or a full set. Full and partial dentures are available at both clinics, including immediate dentures, which are made beforehand so that there are teeth in place from the day the others come out. There is more on our denture page.
One tooth. In suitable cases an implant can be placed at the time the tooth comes out, and bone grafting is available at both clinics where the bone needs building up. The cone beam scan taken before the extraction shows the bone an implant would need. See our implant page.
Children
Children are seen at both clinics. Where a child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule it is bulk billed at both, and extractions are among the basic services the schedule lists. The Bohle Plains clinic has a kids’ play corner.
Getting Ready, and Getting Home
Tell the team about your medical history and every medicine you take, because both can change how an extraction is planned. If you are having sedation, plan for an adult to take you home and for a quiet rest of the day, and do not drive afterwards. The details for your type of sedation, including whether to eat beforehand, are worked out at the consultation rather than on the day. Both clinics have on-site parking, which makes the pickup simpler.
If Something Does Not Feel Right Afterwards
Ring the clinic where the tooth was removed: Kirwan on (07) 4723 2090, or Bohle Plains on (07) 4735 8500. Outside Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, go to a hospital emergency department for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, swelling that is spreading, or any difficulty breathing or swallowing, or call 000.
Who We See Around Kirwan and Bohle Plains
Where a tooth does have to come out, getting home safely and planning the gap afterwards are the practical questions. Both clinics are on the western side of Townsville with on-site parking, and we see DVA card holders at both.
Bohle Plains is one of Townsville’s youngest suburbs: the median age is 28, against 38 across Queensland, and 48.5% of local families are couples with children. Defence is the largest employer of Bohle Plains residents, at 18.2%, and we see DVA card holders at both clinics.
Kirwan is one of Townsville’s largest suburbs, with 20,780 residents and a median age of 38, in line with the state. Together the two clinics serve the western side of Townsville.

What It Costs
The fee depends on the tooth, on whether the removal is simple or surgical, and on whether you choose sedation. You get a written quote after the examination and the imaging, before anything is booked. We claim health fund rebates through HICAPS, we see DVA card holders, and payment plans are available. Both clinics also accept Queensland Health vouchers.

Important: Tooth extraction is a surgical procedure carrying risks including bleeding, infection, dry socket and, uncommonly, altered sensation. Recovery varies between individuals. Whether a tooth can be saved or should be removed can only be judged after an examination and imaging. Fees are confirmed in a written quote. Seek advice appropriate to your circumstances from a qualified health practitioner.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
That is the first question we ask, not the last. Depending on what is wrong, the alternatives are a filling, a crown, root canal treatment, or gum treatment. Extraction is the answer when the tooth is split below the gum, when decay has gone too far to restore, or when advanced gum disease has taken the bone holding it. We will tell you plainly which of those applies and what saving it would involve.
The area is numbed thoroughly first, with topical gel before the injection. You will feel firm pressure, which is normal and is not pain. If you are anxious, or the tooth is a difficult one, oral and intravenous sedation are available at both clinics and a general anaesthetic can be arranged with the visiting anaesthetist. Say so when you book rather than on the day.
Done at both clinics. A tooth that is broken at the gum, still buried, or has curved roots may need to be removed surgically rather than simply lifted out, and that is done at both clinics rather than referred to a city oral surgeon. Cone beam CT imaging on site means the roots and the nerve are seen before we start.
Most people are sore for a few days and improving after that, though it varies with how difficult the tooth was. Two things to watch for: bleeding that will not settle with firm pressure, and pain that gets worse around day three rather than better, which is usually dry socket and is treatable. You get written aftercare and a number to ring.
Usually worth considering, and it is a decision better made before the extraction than after. A gap lets the teeth either side drift, lets the opposing tooth over-erupt, and the bone where the root was slowly resorbs, which narrows the options later. Implants and dentures are both done at both clinics, and planning the replacement at the same time as the extraction often makes it simpler and cheaper.
It depends on the tooth and whether the removal is simple or surgical, and on whether you have sedation. You get a written quote after the examination and imaging, before anything is booked. We claim health fund rebates through HICAPS, we see DVA card holders, and payment plans are available.
Children are seen at both clinics, including for teeth that need to come out. Where a child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule it is bulk billed at both clinics, and extractions are among the basic services the schedule lists, though what is covered depends on the schedule. The Bohle Plains clinic has a kids’ play corner.
That is what immediate dentures are for. They are available at both clinics and are made beforehand, so that there are teeth in place from the day the others come out, and they are adjusted as the gums heal. Whether they suit you depends on which teeth are involved and the state of your gums, which is decided at the consultation.
In some cases, yes. Placing an implant at the time of the extraction is possible at both clinics where the tooth and the bone around it allow it, and a periodontist consults at both. Where the bone needs building up, bone grafting can be part of the plan. It is decided from the imaging, which is why the cone beam scan comes first.
